Differential Pressure Control in Hospitals and Laboratories

Differential Pressure Control in Hospitals and Laboratories

The AFX-9 is the most competitive flush-mounted controller on the market.

The AFX-9 is a high-quality controller that allows readings of differential pressure, temperature, relative humidity, and up to 6 additional external variables. Thanks to its electroluminescent touch screen with variable color schemes, the AFX-9 is very intuitive and easy to use. It is also fully configurable depending on the variables that need to be measured or controlled. It includes several contact inputs and outputs, analog inputs/outputs, and built-in Modbus. This device is designed and manufactured in France.

It is designed for laboratories, climate engineering professionals, cleanrooms, industrial facilities, data centers, ICUs, isolation rooms, and operating rooms.

The AFX9 is operating in many installations, and in this article we will share two examples with you.

AFX9 installed in hospitals performing various functions.

Several AFX9 sensors have been installed in operating theatres of a well-known Hospital Consortium in the Vallès Occidental region, and more recently in healthcare centres in the Canary Islands. Their role is to control differential pressure, temperature, and humidity in the operating room, with the aim of maintaining optimal conditions at all times and preventing the entry or exit of viruses, thus avoiding contamination from outside or within the surgical area.

These devices have also been applied in isolation rooms of the Vallès Occidental hospital centre for two different purposes: first, to control temperature and humidity to ensure the comfort and well-being of the admitted patient. Additionally, to maintain negative pressure inside the room to prevent viruses for which the patient is isolated — such as the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus that causes Covid-19 — from escaping to the outside. The second functionality for which the AFX9 is used in some isolation rooms is exactly the opposite: a protective function towards the patient, to prevent viruses and contaminants from entering the room, for example in patients with immunological diseases, immunosuppressed individuals, or patients undergoing immunosuppressive treatments such as chemotherapy.

In all cases, clients who purchased these units, given the pandemic situation, appreciated the short delivery time. Some devices were delivered in less than 48 hours from the factory. It is worth highlighting that these devices integrate the control function, allowing optimisation of their BMS system (e.g. a SCADA). Moreover, the devices are so easy to configure that no on-site technician was required for programming or installation.

AFX9 installed in laboratories and their Covid-19 vaccine storage areas.

With the arrival of the first Moderna vaccines, one of the challenges was to enable controlled storage rooms before these vaccines arrived at Barajas Airport. In record time, we sent 15 units of the AFX9 controllers to the laboratories acting as the receiving and logistics centre in Madrid. In this case, the devices were used to monitor and control pressure, temperature and humidity variables to properly preserve the Moderna Covid-19 vaccine vials while they were being distributed to the rest of Spain. The vaccine can be stored for up to six months at -20 °C, or for up to thirty days at temperatures between 2 and 8 °C (typical of more domestic refrigerators). We are pleased to have contributed our small part to this collaboration, given the importance of the vaccination campaign and its impact on public health.
